In the summer of 2009 I approached McSweeney’s — an American indie publishing house — to propose working on an iPhone application together. They agreed.
Despite being best known for their lavish print periodicals, we worked together on a concept for a digital subscription-based app. A few months later we launched a platform capable of pushing rich-media content to users, including artwork, movies, songs and a full, immersive book reading experience. We hope that this, combined with our planned updates over the coming months, will become a brave experiment to test the limits of what new digital devices can offer the literary world.
In addition to being the instigator of this project, I handled interface design, application programming, development and architecture of the accompanying server-side systems, as well as assistance with marketing and general promotions.
The application features many of the new iPhone 3.x technologies, including Push Notifications and In App Purchase. It is one of the first products in the App Store to demonstrate a subscription-based payment model for users.
